Mental Health Awareness for Sport and Physical Activity is an eLearning course developed by UK Coaching, Mind and 1st4sport.

The course focuses on how you can support people experiencing mental health problems and help them to thrive inside and outside of physical activity sessions. It takes around 2-3 hours to complete, and importantly, you can work through it at your own pace.

What are the aims?

The course aims to increase knowledge and understanding of mental health, providing practical skills and strategies to be able to:

  1. Build people’s resilience, self-esteem, and confidence
  2. Adapt sessions to make them more inclusive
  3. Enable and support mental health recovery, and
  4. Tackle stigma and discrimination.

Who is it for?

It is recommended for anyone delivering sport and physical activity within a community setting. This includes coaches, fitness instructors, personal trainers, activators, sports administrators, front of house staff, or volunteers.

Thoughts from our community

“I would certainly recommend the course, it was informative and interactive. I have used the course content daily in my practice dealing with certain players and even having the information gained from the course in the back of my mind whilst coaching. I have suggested to all our coaches and volunteers to complete the course to further their understanding of the subject and their players.” Chairman, FC Darlington Locomotives

“This will now be at the forefront of my mind when working with people and will make me think of the possible reasons some people struggle to engage/access sport and physical activity. The course itself allowed me to progress through the modules at my own pace and I was able to take a break and come back to it as and when I needed, I thought this was really good as it give me time for reflection.” Jennifer Lloyd-Edwards, Durham and Chester-le-Street School Sport Partnership

“I felt that the course helped me understand what the signs were of people who might be experiencing mental health issues. Importantly, the course taught how to approach conversations in a proactive and positive manner with people who might be expiring mental health issues. In my role as a researcher, a lot of sensitive topics such as mental health can come up.  Being able to know what to do in the circumstance someone wants to talk about their mental health is important.” Miles, County Durham Sport

“The course was well-organised and took me about the time indicated – 2.5 hours. I think most coaches would find the course useful but other club officials could also benefit. The benefits of physical activity and sport in particular for mental health need to be more widely accepted, and this course is grounded in making exercise accessible.” Trustee and coach, Brandon Table Tennis Club
