Regular participation in physical activity can have a big impact on public health. In order to gain the benefits:
Children and young people should be moderately to vigorously active for at least 60 minutes and up to several hours per day, they should also take part in vigorous activities and those which strengthen muscles and bones on at least three days of the week.
Adults should take part in moderate intensity activities for 150 minutes per week, this can be broken down into anything more than a 10 minute period. Alternatively adults could take part in 75 minutes of vigorous activity per week. In addition to the 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity adults should take part in muscular strengthening activities twice per week.
- Moderate activities would make you feel warmer and your heart beat faster but you would still be able to hold a conversation. Cycling is a great example of a moderate activity.
- Vigorous activities will make you feel much warmer and you may find it difficult to hold a conversation due to breathing deeper. Vigorous activities could include could include sport such as football or swimming.
