Young People Celebrate Sports Volunteering
Young people from across County Durham gathered on Friday 15 July 2011 at New College Durham to celebrate their achievements in sports volunteering.
Students who had each dedicated over 50 hours of their time to volunteering in sport in a school or community setting attended the presentation evening and all received certificates to recognise their achievement. Special Achievement Awards were presented for those who have gone above and beyond in their commitment to volunteering. Awards were also presented for the boy and girl across the county who had volunteered the most hours - with an incredible 700 and 600 hours each.
Special Achievement Award - Laura Edy, Wear Valley & Teesdale SSP
Special Achievement Award - Andrew Elliott, Easington SSP
Special Achievement Award - Khadijah Senghore, Chester-le-Street SSP
Special Achievement Award - Rachel Layfield-Carroll, Sedgefield SSP
Most Hours (Boy) - James Oliver, Durham City SSP (700 hours)
Most Hours (Girl) - Laura Edy, Wear Valley & Teesdale SSP (600 hours)
Students also heard an inspirational speech from Olympic swimmer Chris Cook about the value of volunteers in sport.
County Durham Sport would like to congratulate all of the students involved. Lara Lill, Chair of the County Durham Sport Partnership, said: "Nearly 6 million people across the country volunteer in sport and without their commitment, sport at all levels would suffer. These young people from across County Durham have made a big difference through volunteering in sport and should be very proud of their achievements."
Chris Cook said: "Without the help of volunteers I would not have been able to reach my full potential and chase my dream. Year after year I am always amazed at how much of an impact that volunteers have on the sports we love, and it's always great to celebrate the fantastic work that volunteers do with an awards evening in recognition of the hard work and dedication that people selflessly give."
