Young People Celebrate a Year of Sports Volunteering
Young people from across County Durham gathered on Friday 16 July 2010 at New College Durham to celebrate their achievements in sports volunteering, with a combined total of 8,780 volunteering hours - equivalent to a whole year of non-stop volunteering.
Students who had each dedicated over 50 hours of their time to volunteering in sport in a school or community setting attended the presentation evening and all received certificates to recognise their achievement. Awards were then presented for those who had achieved the most hours of volunteering for each School Sport Partnership, with one student alone having undertaken an incredible 450 hours. Three special achievement awards were also presented:
Most Hours Chester-le-Street SSP - Lauren Ferguson
Most Hours Derwentside SSP - Nikki Liddle
Most Hours Durham City SSP - James Oliver
Most Hours Easington SSP - Martin Green
Most Hours Sedgefield SSP - Rachel Layfield Carroll
Most Hours Wear Valley & Teesdale SSP - Sophie Brown
Special Achievement Award - Megan Crombie, Easington SSP
Special Achievement Award - Josh Jolly, Sedgefield SSP
Special Achievement Award - Laura Edy, Wear Valley & Teesdale SSP
Students also heard an inspirational speech from Craig Heap, double Commonwealth Gold medalist in gymnastics about the value of volunteers in sport.
County Durham Sport would like to congratulate all of the students involved. Ben Williams, Executive Director, County Durham Sport said: "Nearly 6 million people across the country volunteer in sport and without their commitment, sport at all levels would suffer. What these young people from across County Durham have achieved is amazing and we would like to thank them for all their hard work."
