You really can swim 100 miles in a day
And here's how by making a Big Splash with the County Durham Swim Active Century Swim.
On Sunday 26 June at ten swimming pools across County Durham, you can join forces to swim as far as you like as fast as you wish from one length to 100 lengths. Everyone's contribution will be recorded as swimmers across the county aim to reach a cumulative total of 100 miles , raising money for charity as they swim. Residents of County Durham have the chance to take part in this special day of swimming. The event aims to get everyone swimming and sees the launch of three programmes Swim Active, British Gas Swimfit and Big Splash.
Through British Swimming and the BBC, Big Splash is a national campaign to inspire the nation to swim. Big Splash seeks to encourage new people into the pool and help those who already swim to have more fun more often.
Double Olympic champion Becky Adlington is supporting the campaign: "Swimming is my life but just getting in the pool a couple of times a week is a really great way of getting active and staying healthy. I'm right behind anything that encourages people to take the plunge and swim more often."
The Century Swim kicks off the Big Splash campaign in County Durham and two new swimming programmes; Swim Active and British Gas Swimfit. Dedicated Century Swim time slots have been allocated at all the participating pools on 26 June. Residents taking part are encouraged to make a donation to charity as entrance to the pools on the day will be free of charge. There has never been a better time to start swimming in County Durham.
Belle Vue Swim Centre will be supporting the North East Ambulance, The Louisa Centre the Willowburn Hospice and Peterlee Leisure Centre British Wheelpower. Durham County Council Chairman, Cllr Dennis Morgan's nominated charity The Rainbow Trust will benefit from the swims at Chester le St, Newton Aycliffe, Spennymoor, Woodhouse Close, Freemans Quay, Glenholme and Teesdale Leisure Centres. To encourage residents to start and stay swimming for a fitter lifestyle the CPAL 'SwimActive ' programme at selected pools is targeted at 40-74 year olds. Swim Active encourages people to swim on a regular basis to improve health and wellbeing. The programme provides a variety of water based activities and dedicated pool-side support at selected sessions over a 12 week period. CPAL is supported by NHS County Durham and Darlington and County Durham Sport, aiming to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease in County Durham through increased physical activity. Taking the gym-style programme into the pool, 'Swim Fit' caters for all abilities and levels of fitness. Specially designed programmes to help you be more Healthy, Shape Up and Tone, or use swimming as a key part of your fitness training are available across County Durham pools. There is even a special Activate programme for returning swimmers who want to improve their confidence in the water.
Olympic Swimmer Chris Cook represented Great Britain for nearly ten years and recommends British Gas Swimfit 'I regularly use Swimfit sessions to add a bit of variety to my swim training. After retiring from swimming I now go it alone and train for fun and fitness and swim fit gives me variety and sets you some handy little targets and drills to do. If you're new to swim training it also has some info in there to help you pick up the language used in swimming... once you have a few sessions under your belt you can make your way through the stages and challenge your fitness, skill and ability! Enjoy'
Enjoying the water is something open to people of all ages and abilities. More quality time with the kids, the companionship of an Aqua Aerobics class, swimming for health and fitness or just splashing about for fun, are just a few reasons to become a Big Splasher. Everyone has a Big Splash in them so be inspired and get swimming in County Durham.
