Pumas Launch Women's team

Rob Laverick, Heidi Swaffield & John Gray

Peterlee Pumas & the RFL team in the North East have been working furiously over the last 6 months to establish a women's section to the already successful club.

John Gray has been in discussions with Heidi Swaffield from Darlington Mowden Park Sharks, women's RFC also involved has been Sade Hacking formerly with Newcastle University & Northumbria University & England regular Katy Storie. Heidi stated: "All of the girls at Mowden Park Sharks are quite excited at the prospect of playing Rugby League this summer. We have had a few training sessions with the Peterlee Pumas open age men already & are looking forward to the season starting on May 14th".

The team has been pulled together from Mowden Park Sharks, Northumbria University & Teeside University & it is hoped that they can also recruit from Universities at Sunderland & Newcastle.

Peterlee Pumas Women's team have had a boost off the field with Durham Community Foundation awarding the women's team a grant for almost £2,600.00 which will pay for 2 of the ladies to go on a UKCC level 2 coaching course & will also help with transport costs, which will prove invaluable when you consider the Pumas will have to play their away fixtures throughout North Yorkshire.

John Gray RFL North East Regional Development Officer said: "It is great to see Rugby League developing now into the women's game & hopefully Peterlee Pumas are only the first of many women's teams we see in the North East in the near future".
