Park View Community School - Double Sportshall Champions!
More than 130 of the region's most talented young athletes took part in the Aviva Secondary School Sportshall North East Regional Final at the Louisa Centre, Stanley on 24 February, 2010. The County Durham representatives from Park View Community School (Chester-le-Street), St. John's Catholic School (Bishop Auckland) and Ferryhill Business and Enterprise College joined finalists from other schools from across Northumberland, Tyne & Wear and Tees Valley to compete in this inaugural schools event.
Sportshall is a team-based competition that provides a structured introduction to core athletics skills and develops these via an exciting and innovative format. Athletes compete in both track and field events including an 4 x 2 Lap Relay, 6 Lap Race, 8 Lap Paarlauf, Standing Triple Jump, Speed Bounce and Shot and score points for their team. Olympic 400m Gold Medalist, Christine Ohuruogu is a supporter of Sportshall Athletics: "Athletics must be fun and exciting to inspire young people to get involved. I believe Sportshall is the perfect introduction to athletics competition, I know many of my GB and NI teammates started their career doing Sportshall and have never looked back!"
The winners on the day, of both the Boys and Girls events were Park View Community School from Chester-le-Street. They had dominated the competition from their partnership round through to the County Final and finally achieving the double at Regional level. Congratulations to them and well done also to St. John's Catholic School who were Runners Up in the Girls and Ferryhill who finished in a very commendable fourth place in the Boys. Will some of these youngsters also have Olympic dreams in their sights?
