National Guides Database
For athletes with a visual impairment, having a guide athlete to race and train with is sometimes as essential as their bike or running shoes, and without a dedicated guide to help an athlete develop it can seriously hinder an athlete's goals of developing in the sport.
The role of a guide can be hugely varied from a one off volunteering of time to a long term relationship with an athlete, which can culminate in competing in World Championships or more.
There are currently two main issues regarding guides, these are as follows:
• To increase the number of visually impaired people taking part in triathlon, we will need an equal (if not more) amount of willing guides to assist them, and we currently do not have a method of recruiting these people
• As the standard of Paratriathlon continues to increase and with a potential Paralympics in the not too distance future, the standard of guides will need increase to allow of GB athletes any chance of competing highly at international events.
Due to the above points British Triathlon is looking to begin a recruitment process to capture the names of people who would be willing to sit on a database incase a local athlete requires a guide to either begin their journey in the sport or to continue developing and competing.
