County Durham School tries hurling in Ireland
Bearpark Primary Durham and Oanset Primary from Ried, Holland meet again in Ireland to try hurling. Children from both schools have already played New Age Kurling in UK and ice-skating in Holland as well as learning the Dutch game of Fives.
As part of a Comenius Project "The Circle of Friends" a group of 10 year 5/6 children from Bearpark and 9 children from Holland met up along with teachers from Iceland and Germany from 2nd March to 6th March at the Scoil an Duinninigh in Swords near Dublin. The children had coaching in the Irish sport and then played in a game with mixed teams from both countries. The game is a cross between hockey and lacrosse. Neither schools had played before but all thought the game was fast and exciting although quite difficult.
Bearpark Primary School won Primary School Contribution to PE and School Sport (sponsored by Durham County Council) at the County Durham Sport Awards 2010.
