Chance for young people to show their talent

31 young people from across County Durham gathered at the Riverside Sports Pavilion on Friday 25 June 2010 to take part in disability football, table tennis and athletics sessions. Representatives from the sports' national governing bodies were on hand to keep an eye out for any future Paralympians.

The students had the chance to try out all three sports over the course of the day, as well as listen to an inspirational speech from World Cup winner amputee footballer and Paralympic volleyball player Steve Johnson. Steve later entertained the young people by joining in the football and impressed them with his speed and skills on the ball.

Ben Williams, Executive Director County Durham Sport, said: "This programme gives young people across the county a great chance to achieve their potential and all the participants seemed to really enjoy this event. We hope that seeing Steve Johnson in action has been an inspiration."

The County Athlete Assessment Day (CAAD) is part of the Playground to Podium national programme developed to help young disabled people progress from PE and community sport to high level performance and competition.

A Wheelchair Basketball CAAD will also take place for County Durham students on Monday 19 July 2010.
