Award Shows County Durham Sport's Commitment to Safeguarding & Protecting Children

Lara Lill & Ben Williams with the Advanced Safeguarding Standard

County Durham Sport has been awarded the Advanced Level of the NSPCC National Standards for Safeguarding and Protecting Children in Sport at the recent NSPCC CPSU National Conference. The Advanced Level was achieved in June 2009. This achievement highlights County Durham Sport's dedication to safeguarding children and young people in sport in County Durham as well as recognising improvements made in this important area of work.

The NSPCC Safeguarding Standards provide support and advice for organisations on developing child protection procedures in order to help them safeguard children and young people, providing a framework for all those involved in sport to help them create a safe sporting environment for children and young people and protect them from harm. The standards are based on current good practice and are informed by legislation and guidance, evidence from research and experience of what works, drawing from the field of child protection and from sport.

Lara Lill, Chair of County Durham Sport, says: "County Durham Sport is proud to have achieved and been awarded the Advanced Level of Safeguarding Standards. This shows our commitment to making sport safe for children and young people in County Durham and we would like to thank all our partners who have supported this area of work to help us improve our safeguarding practices. We will now continue working with the NSPCC to develop and improve our safeguarding practices in County Durham."

The areas covered in the standards include policy, procedures and systems, prevention, codes of practice and behaviour, equity, communication, education and training, access to advice and support, implementation and monitoring, and influencing.
