Training & Opportunities
We recognise the importance of training in this field. Some equality courses are available through our Club, Coach and Volunteer Development Programme April-June 2009
Triathlon is an exciting multi-discipline sport involving a continuous race over various distances in the three disciplines of swimming, cycling and running. A standard triathlon is made up of a swim, followed by a cycle ride, followed by a run. Competitors race against the clock, which starts as they enter the swim and stops as they cross the finish line after the run.
British Triathlon has developed a classification system to ensure that disabled triathletes can compete and participate in triathlons throughout the country. Rules have been modified for disabled triathletes and over 150 races throughout the country have been designated as being fully inclusive for disabled athletes.
Currently the International Triathlon Union is negotiating with the International Paralympic Committee, with a view to triathlon being included as a demonstration sport in London 2012, with full inclusion in 2016.

Mencap Sport have launched a new course for coaches, teachers, SSCO's, sports development officers, club volunteers and sports managers to help ensure that your club or service is fully accessible and inclusive to people with a learning disability. For more information on this course, see the Learning Disability and Sports Equity Flyer.
The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) has received funding to support the development of an Advocacy & Activity Buddy Scheme (AABS) over a three year period to 2010.
The aim of this scheme is to increase the participation of disabled people within sport and physical activity. Activity Buddies will promote and deliver a buddy system within sport and leisure, providing disabled people with volunteer support to enable them to better access sport and physical activity.
If you are interested in becoming a Buddy or would like more information, please see the following documents.
