National Governing Bodies
NGBs provide a range of services for players, clubs, coaches and volunteers. NGBs are responsible for the governance, development and promotion of their sport across the nation.
Sport England helps fund National Governing Bodies to deliver their three outcomes - grow, sustain and excel and provides additional support to help them achieve this.
National governing bodies of sport (NGBs) are at the heart of the strategy as it is their networks of community clubs, coaches and volunteers that make sport happen.
£480 million is being invested by Sport England through 46 governing bodies over four years and have agreed grow, sustain and excel targets with each one. Each sport has developed a Whole Sport Plan that explains how it will use this money to achieve these targets.
Grow outcome targets and progress are measured annually through the Active People survey.
Sustain outcomes for each NGB are measured by people's satisfaction with the elements of their sport that are important to them. This is measured annually through the Quality of your Sporting Experience Survey (SQSE). Headline results for each sport from the first satisfaction survey are now available.
The excel outcome is based on the size and quality of the 'talent pool' for each sport and is different for each governing body.
How were the 46 NGBs selected?
The main criteria were:
- An Olympic or Paralympic sport, or
- Already designated as a development sport by Sport England, or
- More than 75,000 people in England participating in that sport (Active People)
Other recognised sports may also receive funding for specific projects through other Sport England funding streams.
CSPs and NGBs
County sports partnerships have always played a key role in helping national governing bodies work with local partners to make the most of local opportunities.
With this in mind, Sport England has funded the 49 CSPs to provide a consistent set of services to support NGBs to deliver 09-13 plans at a local level.
We support National Governing Bodies of Sport to deliver their 09-13 plans effectively (and enhanced by partners) in County Durham via the core specification.
